First of all, what made you want to start producing?

I’ve always had an interest in making my own music. The thought of playing my own sound combined with the reaction of the crowd dancing has to be the main reason I started.

What would you recommend to starting producers?

Best advice I could give for anyone starting in the industry is to make a plan with some milestones. Talk to other producers and ask questions as it is not easy at the start. Don’t look at everyone else and expect to be where they are, because the world just does not work like that. Your first milestone might be to make a track in one month and get feedback from a label or DJ in 3 months. Remember it has taken some of the biggest producers in the world years to make it to the biggest labels.

What’s the first thing you do when starting a new track?

Start in the middle of the track, this is the point when all your sounds are in full flow. From that point on if you feel everything is working then work your way backwards and forwards.

How long does it take on average to make a track from start to finish?

I have lots of projects running and have a tendency to do parts at a time, but if I start a remix for a label or an artist, then it takes me around 8 hours.

Which of your tracks are you most proud of?

RU which I signed to Lapsus Supernova’s label was my first No.1, so that also gave me a great sense of pride too. Also MUMA that I signed to Solardo’s Label SOLA, which was a very cool track I worked very hard on.

What is your favorite part of producing music?

The best part is hearing a finished track fully mixed and mastered, this I really like. I also really like testing new music out in the clubs.

How did you get in contact with record labels?

This is the hard part. You have to just search for emails and contacts. Nowadays it’s a lot easier with Trackstack, Hello Demo and direct websites. Years ago it was tough waiting for a reply and some labels were simply untouchable for a new producer.

Why and when do you use headphones instead of a monitor?

I use monitors mostly when writing a track. I have Rokit 5’s, but when I’m checking out sounds to use in the track I use my headphones. This makes a difference with the EQ so you can take away the background noise and headphones can help you hear this.

What is your number 1 low end mixing tip?

My number one tip is to do the following four things, or the bass and kick will not sound good together, this is mainly for tech house. Sidechain the bass and kick together and use a compressor on the bass. You can also look to use lots of attack and release on the kick and use Drum Buss as this really gives it a punchy sound.

What kind of music do you listen to in your spare time?

Old School music and 80’s or 90’s dance as this gives me ideas and inspires me for new music.

Which artists inspire you?

Calvin Harris, Chris Lake, Jamie Jones, Roger Sanchez, Dave Lee. Each has their own style and genre which has made them world famous in their own field but one that stands out over the rest is “CARL COX”. He has done incredible music in all genres over decades. It really cannot be matched in my eyes. He's also a great gardener too like Calvin Harris!

What can we expect from K-Mack in the near future?

You can expect lots of new music for 2022 on 303 Lovers, Purveyor Underground, Hotfuss, Material, Nastyfunk, Ride and many more. I’m working on lots of new music with many artists from around the globe as this industry gives you that global reach.

I am also currently working for A&R for a fantastic label called Nastyfunk, so most of the music you have heard this year I have been searching for and signing this is something I’m very happy to be doing.

I will continue to host my Fortnightly Label Showcase on Data Transmission Radio Thursday 9pm UK. Each show has a worldwide reaching viewers and only the best music from a label for each show.

Latest release of K-Mack
K-Mack (Hottrax, Repopulate Mars) continues his ascent to the upper echelons of electronic music with his return to Unlearn Records with latest EP Dance With Me / Lost Ur Mind.

K-Mack’s ascent has been staggering, already resulting in releases on a huge array of AAA imprints including Repopulate Mars, Lapsus, Material and Hottrax. He has established himself as a musical force to be reckoned with via a series of gritty tech house bangers, earning support from legends of the electronic underground such as Jamie Jones, Annie Mac and Lee Foss. Now K-Mack lands on Doc Brown’s Unlearn with his new two-tracker Dance With Me / Lost Ur Mind.

K-Mack’s previous outing on Unlearn – his remix of MC Flipside and Preston Zane’s Late Night Disco – has been the label’s biggest selling track of the last 12 months, and this latest EP looks set to be equally successful. Dance With Me is a hypnotic groover which rolls along on squelchy bass and looped vocals, skittering hats and percussion providing the rhythmic backbone. Lost Ur Mind is even chunkier, with pummelling drums offset by a gorgeously soulful vocal sample. Both are out-and-out club weapons, coming soon to a dancefloor near you.
